Questions
Your seaplane questions, answered
From weather and what to bring to where we fly and what happens on the day, these are the questions our guests ask us most. Still curious? Get in touch with our team.
What flights and experiences do you offer?
There’s more than one way to see Tasmania from a seaplane.
Whether you have ten minutes or most of a day, want to see Hobart from above or land somewhere rather more remote, we offer a range of shared and private seaplane experiences:
- Scenic Flights: From a 10-minute Seaplane Taster to flights over Bruny Island and the spectacular Three Capes, with Tasmania unfolding beneath you.
- Fly & Dine Experiences: Private adventures combining scenic flying with time on the ground and a Tasmanian picnic in a remarkable setting, from Maria Island and Bruny Island to Port Davey and the Gordon River.
- Destination Flights: Make getting there part of the adventure, with private one-way flights connecting Hobart with destinations including Freycinet, Saffire, Port Davey, Strahan, Flinders Island and King Island to name a few.
- Bushwalker Transfers: A very Tasmanian solution to reaching some of the Southwest’s remote walking routes, combining air and water access where required.
- Private Charters: Have the aircraft to yourself, with the freedom to land on water or land and reach some remarkable corners of Tasmania. Tell us where you’d like to go. Tasmania gives us plenty to work with.
Sometimes the flight is the adventure. Sometimes it’s how you get to one.
Where do we meet, and where are you located?
Right in the heart of Hobart’s waterfront.
You’ll find Above & Beyond Tasmanian Seaplanes at Kings Pier Marina, Franklin Wharf, between Mures and the water, just a short walk from Salamanca Place and central Hobart. Our waterfront office sits alongside the marina, with fishing boats, ferries and harbour life all around.
Depending on your flight, you may depart from the waterfront or transfer with us to the aircraft’s departure point. We’ll confirm exactly where to meet and what to expect before you fly.
See our Contact Us page for a map and directions.
What happens if the weather affects our flight?
Most flights operate as planned, but Tasmania’s weather occasionally has other ideas.
Our pilots keep a close eye on conditions leading up to every flight. A little cloud or rain doesn’t necessarily mean we can’t fly; decisions are based on the conditions relevant to your particular route, with safety and comfort always the priority.
If weather does prevent your flight from operating as planned, we’ll talk through the options with you. Depending on your itinerary and availability, that may include a later departure, another day or an alternative experience.
If your time in Tasmania is limited or you have onward travel arrangements, let us know when you book. It helps our team understand what flexibility you have should the weather intervene.
For details about weather-related changes, cancellations and associated travel costs, please see our Terms and Conditions.
Is there a minimum number of passengers required?
Our shared scenic flights generally operate with a minimum of four passengers. You’re very welcome to book for one, two or three people; we’ll simply combine you with other guests booked on the same flight.
If minimum numbers aren’t reached, our team will contact you to discuss the options, which may include another departure time or date. If we’re unable to operate your flight, you’ll receive a full refund.
Prefer to have the seaplane to yourselves? Our private experiences and charters are just that, private, so there’s no minimum number of guests required.
What's the baggage allowance?
For a few hours Above & Beyond, you won’t need much.
On our shared scenic flights and experiences, each guest can bring up to 4kg of carry-on items, which is plenty for the essentials: a camera, phone, sunglasses and an extra layer for when you step out and explore.
If you’re flying with us as a Destination Flight, the allowance increases to 23kg per person, so there’s room for the luggage that comes with a longer Tasmanian stay.
Travelling with something a little out of the ordinary, or more than your allowance? Have a chat with us before you fly. Aircraft weight and space are carefully managed, and we’ll let you know what’s possible. Additional baggage may incur a fee.
Is there a weight limit for passengers?
Yes. Our aircraft has a maximum individual passenger weight of 130kg, and we’re unable to carry guests above this limit.
Before boarding, we confirm passenger weights so our pilots can accurately calculate the aircraft’s weight and balance for each flight. It’s a standard part of our pre-flight preparations and is always handled discreetly.
If you have any questions before booking, please get in touch with our team. We’re very happy to have a quiet conversation before you fly.
Can children fly with you?
Absolutely. Seeing Tasmania from the air is pretty special at any age.
Children aged 3–13 travel with an accompanying adult, while infants aged 0–2 can fly free of charge on a parent or guardian’s lap.
There are limits to the number of infants we can carry on each flight due to aircraft seating and weight requirements, so if you’re travelling with little ones, have a chat with our team when you book and we’ll help with the details.
What's your cancellation policy?
Plans change. If you need to cancel, just let us know as soon as you can.
For shared scenic flights:
- More than 7 days before departure: no cancellation fee
- 72 hours to 7 days before departure: 50% cancellation fee
- Less than 72 hours before departure, or no-show: no refund
For private charters and destination flights:
- More than 30 days before departure: no cancellation fee
- 15–29 days before departure: 50% cancellation fee
- 14 days or less before departure, or no-show: no refund
You’ll find the full details, including cancellations or changes due to weather, in our Terms and Conditions.
Do I need travel insurance?
We recommend it. As you’d expect, Above & Beyond carries the appropriate insurance for our aviation operations. This is separate from personal travel insurance, which we don’t provide.
We recommend arranging your own cover before you fly, particularly for cancellation or disruption, medical expenses, personal accident, baggage and other travel arrangements.
Every policy is different, so check the terms, limits and exclusions to make sure the cover is right for your trip.
